Marmorino stucco in Satigny: Venetian decorative plaster with a polished marble effect, applied by CFC-qualified craftsmen
Azzo Peinture applies marmorino stucco — also known as marmorino paint, marmorino render, stucco veneziano or Venetian stucco — from our workshop in Satigny, throughout the canton of Geneva. Two CFC-qualified plasterers and painters, each with over 25 years’ experience in the trade. A decorative render made from lime and marble powder, applied in successive thin layers and then polished with a stainless-steel trowel — creating a glossy, marble-effect finish that reflects light like no other wall covering.
Marmorino stucco is a Venetian plaster made from lime and marble dust that plays with the light
A direct descendant of the Venetian Renaissance tradition, marmorino stucco — or stucco veneziano — is a decorative plaster made from slaked lime, finely ground marble powder, mineral pigments and water. It is applied with a stainless-steel trowel in three to five successive layers, after which a final polish with a hot stainless-steel trowel gives it its glossy, marble-effect finish. Palladio and the Venetian masters were already using it to decorate the palaces along the Grand Canal. Today, it adorns the canton’s most discerning contemporary interiors.
Why choose marmorino stucco for your interiors
No other wall covering produces the visual effect of marmorino stucco. It combines three rare qualities — a glossy, marble-effect finish that reflects light, a breathable and durable mineral composition, and an instantly recognisable, prestigious aesthetic signature.
- An inimitable marble effect : The final polishing with a stainless-steel file gives marmorino stucco its characteristic finish — a satin sheen, with veining and subtle variations in colour that evoke polished marble. Neither paint, nor wallpaper, nor marble-effect tiles can replicate this depth. A marmorino stucco wall appears as though carved from stone, with the play of light changing throughout the day.
- A renowned luxury brand : With its roots in the Venetian palaces of the Renaissance, marmorino stucco carries a history of prestige that is immediately apparent. It is the finish of choice for luxury hotels, designer boutiques, fine-dining restaurants and residential interiors seeking a striking architectural signature.
- A breathable mineral-based coating : Lime and marble powder are two mineral-based materials that allow walls to breathe. Marmorino stucco naturally regulates humidity, resists mould and contributes to indoor air quality — comparable in this respect to calce cruda and superior to acrylic paints, which seal off the walls.
- Exceptional durability : When properly applied to a prepared surface, a marmorino stucco wall will last 20 to 30 years without requiring any significant maintenance. Venetian palaces have proven this over several centuries. In the context of a residential or commercial interior, it is an investment that will last for decades.
Where marmorino stucco really comes into its own in a Geneva home
Marmorino stucco is not a subtle finish. Its bold, glossy and sculptural visual character means it is best suited to specific settings where the aesthetic ambition justifies the investment.
- Entrance halls and reception areas : Marmorino stucco immediately sets the tone for an exceptional interior. On the walls of a high-end residential entrance hall or reception room, it creates a striking architectural feature that catches the eye the moment you walk in. Light colours — off-white, beige, light grey — enhance natural light and create a sense of space.
- High-end contemporary living rooms : Whether applied to an entire wall or an accent feature, marmorino stucco brings a depth and play of light to a living room that paint simply cannot match. It works just as well in contemporary minimalist interiors as it does in renovations of bourgeois Geneva flats.
- Private bathrooms and spas : The breathable and antimicrobial properties of lime make marmorino stucco an ideal choice for creating a mineral-inspired spa atmosphere. Please note, however, that in areas exposed to direct contact with water (around walk-in showers, washbasin tops), a protective treatment using lime wax or a compatible matt varnish is essential to ensure durability.
- Shops, hotels and fine-dining restaurants : In high-end commercial spaces, marmorino stucco enhances both the brand and the ambience. Fashion boutiques, lobbies of luxury hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants, architects’ practices — wherever a space needs to stand out immediately, marmorino stucco provides a visual signature that is unmistakable.
- Accent walls and sculptural headboards : In a master bedroom or suite, a single wall finished in marmorino stucco — behind the headboard or on the feature wall — is enough to transform the atmosphere. A marble effect in beige or light grey creates a soft, cosy atmosphere; in deep black or anthracite stucco, it creates an intense and dramatic atmosphere.
A step-by-step guide to applying marmorino stucco by hand
Marmorino stucco is probably the most demanding decorative wall finish a plasterer-painter can master. Its final quality depends entirely on technical skill — preparing the substrate, applying successive layers, and, above all, the final polishing with a stainless steel trowel, which gives it its characteristic glossy finish.
- Careful preparation of the substrate : Marmorino stucco requires a perfectly flat surface. Cracks must be carefully filled, the surface thoroughly smoothed, finely sanded and dusted, followed by the application of a specific lime-compatible primer. Any imperfections in the surface will be visible in the final glossy finish.
- Choice of pigment and on-site trial : There is a wide range of colours available — pure white for a Carrara marble effect, beige for travertine marble, light grey or anthracite grey for contemporary schemes, and deep black for a dramatic effect. A sample is applied to the wall to be treated, polished, and approved in the natural light of the site before any work commences.
- First coat of primer : A thin, even layer of marmorino stucco is applied with a stainless-steel trowel across the entire surface. This prepares the surface for the subsequent layers and provides the colour base. Drying time: 12 to 24 hours.
- Second and third layers — creating movement : these layers, applied with precise, skilled strokes using a criss-cross technique, create the veining and interplay of shades that evoke natural marble. Each layer is applied wet-on-wet, with careful control of the amount of material and the pressure applied to the trowel.
- Final polishing with stainless steel — the signature step : this is where marmorino stucco acquires its characteristic glossy finish. A warm stainless steel blade is run over the still-fresh surface, applying precise pressure and at a specific angle to compress the material and bring the marble particles to the surface. The wall takes on a satin sheen, then becomes glossy. This technique radically distinguishes marmorino stucco from all other mineral finishes.
- Allow to dry completely and polish if necessary : the final colour develops after 4 to 7 days of drying. On items subject to high levels of water exposure, a natural lime wax is applied as a final step to enhance protection without altering the finish.
Marmorino stucco, lime plaster or polished concrete: which decorative finish to choose
Three traditional mineral-based techniques are often confused, even though they produce very different finishes. Here’s a brief overview of each to help you make your choice — we’ll then assist you with a sample applied to the actual surface.
Marmorino stucco: a polished finish with a marble effect
A glossy, satin finish, with veins and subtle shading reminiscent of polished marble. Marmorino stucco makes a striking visual statement — it is the ideal choice when a wall needs to be an architectural feature in its own right. Marble effect, light, prestige. It belongs to the large family of decorative stucco finishes which Azzo has mastered, and which is its most iconic and prestigious finish.
Calce cruda: a velvety matt finish with depth
A soft, matt finish with subtle variations in shade. The calce cruda is the ideal choice when you’re looking for a beautiful mineral paint with character, rather than a bold finish. It complements marmorino stucco and is often used in bedrooms and private rooms.
Polished concrete: contemporary industrial mineral aesthetics
A harder, more contemporary finish with a mineral cement look. Polished concrete can be laid on floors and walls alike, including in bathrooms where complete waterproofing is required. Ideal for interiors with an industrial design or for a contemporary bathroom.
Why entrust your stucco marmorino project to Azzo, a craftsman from Satigny?
Two CFC-qualified craftsmen based in Satigny, each with over 25 years’ experience, who personally oversee every marmorino stucco project in the canton.
A craft skill that can’t be learnt from a tutorial
Marmorino stucco is probably the most demanding mineral finish in terms of technical skill. The final polishing with a stainless steel tool requires a precise understanding of the material, fine control over pressure and angle, and the experience gained from dozens of projects to ensure the glossy finish is achieved. Aureliano and Harald applied marmorino stucco to dozens of projects in Geneva before offering it commercially. Their technique is rock-solid.
A polished sample validated in situ prior to construction
Whether on a screen or in a colour chart, marmorino stucco doesn’t look the same as it does on your wall, once polished, in your own light. We always apply a polished sample of the chosen colour to your wall and wait for your approval in both morning and evening light before starting the work. This step takes a few days but ensures there are absolutely no regrets.
Our workshop in Satigny: a rapid response service across the canton
Based in Satigny, in the heart of the canton, we can respond quickly anywhere in Geneva — the city of Geneva, Carouge, Lancy, Vernier, Meyrin, Grand-Saconnex, Plan-les-Ouates, Bernex, Onex, Versoix and the surrounding area. Aureliano or Harald oversee every marmorino stucco project from the initial site visit through to final handover, without subcontracting and without rotating teams.
A marmorino stucco project: how does it actually work?
From the initial visit to handover, five clear stages — ensuring a well-managed project and a result that meets your expectations.
- Technical inspection and assessment of the substrates : travel from Satigny to any location within the canton, assessment of the condition of the walls, identification of the necessary preparatory work (levelling, sanding, priming), discussion of the desired finish and presentation of the colour chart showing the available shades.
- Detailed estimate : preparation, priming, application of coats, polishing, optional protection — itemised quote, transparent price per m². Marmorino stucco is significantly more expensive than conventional paint — we explain this clearly so that you can make an informed decision.
- Fitting a polished sample in situ : We apply a sample of the desired colour to the wall in question and blend it in, then await your approval in the natural light of the site before proceeding. This stage may take a few days but prevents work from going ahead with the wrong colour.
- Directed by Aureliano or Harald : Careful preparation of the surfaces, application of a suitable primer, followed by the application of layers of stucco marmorino using the characteristic artisanal technique, and a final polish with a stainless steel tool. We clean up at the end of each day, taking the utmost care with your home.
- Complete drying and acceptance : The final colour and sheen will become apparent after 4 to 7 days of drying. A joint inspection will take place at this stage, during which the finished result will be approved and a photo portfolio provided if requested.
