Waxed concrete: a modern, durable and customisable surface

Durability and performance.

The robustness of waxed concrete is well established. Made from cement combined with resins, this thin coating is exceptionally hard-wearing. Once sealed with a protective varnish, it resists everyday knocks, scratches and stains, ensuring a durable floor or wall even in high-traffic areas. This material withstands intensive use without batting an eyelid: it's just as suitable for busy family homes as it is for commercial premises that are put to the test. You benefit from a stable, durable surface that will retain its integrity for many years.

Contemporary design.

In visual terms, waxed concrete captivates with its resolutely modern appearance. Its smooth, continuous surface, with no joint lines, creates a refined ambience that visually enlarges the space. Very popular in interior design, this covering offers a contemporary, minimalist aesthetic that complements all styles - from industrial loft to more classic interiors in search of modernity. Unlike tiling, with its visible joints, waxed concrete has a uniform, elegant finish. What's more, you can choose a matt, satin or gloss finish, depending on the effect you're looking for, to perfect the design of any room.

Made-to-measure finish.

Each waxed concrete product is unique and can be customised. Thanks to a wide choice of pigments, textures and application techniques, you can obtain the colour and finish that perfectly match your décor. From the mineral greys typical of industrial style to warmer or pastel shades and nuanced or marbled effects, waxed concrete adapts to your desires. It can be applied to a wide range of surfaces (rough concrete floor, screed, plaster wall, prepared old tiles, etc.), giving you a great deal of freedom in your interior design projects. You can match your waxed concrete floors and walls to the rest of your interior for a completely bespoke result that combines character and elegance.

Waxed concrete: your questions, our answers

Yes, in fact it's one of the most popular renovation solutions. Waxed concrete adheres to many surfaces, including tiles, provided they are stable, clean and properly prepared (degreased and primed if necessary). Covering old tiles with waxed concrete avoids the need to break up and remove the old covering, which significantly reduces the time and cost of the work. In just a few millimetres, you'll have a new, modern, seamless covering that completely hides the original tiles. It's a fast, effective way of modernising a tiled floor or wall without demolition.

What's more, old tiling adhesives often contain asbestos, so working over them avoids the need for costly asbestos removal. The thickness is thin but very solid (around 4 mm).

Wall2Floor Top Coat Waterproof is a two-component, spatulable, epoxy paste coating for interiors, for horizontal and vertical applications. It is particularly suitable for use in damp environments or where there is frequent contact with water. Thanks to its special formulation, this coating produces a continuous, seamless surface that is highly resistant to wear. If the varnish is scratched, it does not absorb water and therefore does not change colour.

Waxed Concrete can even be used in steam rooms.

Maintenance is carried out using non-alkaline products, and we can supply specific products for optimum maintenance, particularly in water rooms due to the limescale. For other surfaces, no special care is required apart from not using alkaline products.

Yes, when laid according to the rules of the trade and properly protected, waxed concrete offers resistance that is perfectly compatible with commercial or intensive use. Many shops, showrooms, restaurants and offices choose this material for their floors because of its elegant appearance and robustness. A waxed concrete floor can easily withstand heavy traffic, including the repeated passage of customers, the movement of furniture and the impact of heels. It can withstand neither knocks nor wear, as long as its protective layer is well maintained. Azzo Peinture, for example, has created waxed concrete floors for shops in Geneva, with the result combining modern design and durability. As with all floor coverings, regular maintenance and periodic renewal of the protective varnish ensure that the floor stays looking new despite heavy use.

Correctly applied to a sound substrate, waxed concrete is unlikely to crack on its own. Its resin-enriched formulation gives it a slight elasticity, allowing it to follow micro-movements in the substrate without cracking. As long as the substrate underneath is stable (no structural cracks) and the installation has been carried out according to the rules of the trade, the risk of cracking or delamination is very low. What's more, waxed concrete does not crumble or discolour with age or UV light: it retains its original appearance for many years. To guarantee its longevity, all you need to do is look after it (gentle cleaning, a new coat of protection every few years if necessary). In the event of an exceptional impact or deep scratch, it is generally possible to repair the waxed concrete locally without having to redo the entire surface, which also contributes to the longevity of this covering.

Waxed concrete for renovation: easy application and minimal maintenance

When it comes to renovation, waxed concrete is an invaluable ally for transforming your spaces without the need for major works. Its thinness (around 2 to 3 mm) means it can be applied directly to an existing surface, particularly wall or floor tiles, without having to remove the old covering. Covering old tiles with waxed concrete avoids having to break the walls or floor, which greatly reduces the time and cost of the job. Whether you want to modernise a kitchen floor or give a new lease of life to the tiled walls in your bathroom, waxed concrete adheres perfectly after proper preparation (cleaning, primer) and creates a smooth, even, seamless new surface that completely hides the old surface. Renovation is quicker, cleaner and more economical than completely removing the tiles.

Waxed concrete is also very easy to maintain. Its smooth surface can be cleaned effortlessly and is not affected by stains. On a daily basis, simply sweep or vacuum to remove dust, then wipe the floor with a damp cloth, warm water and a mild detergent (such as black soap or Marseille soap). There's no need to scrub vigorously or use aggressive products: thanks to the absence of joints, dirt has nowhere to settle and gentle cleaning is all that's needed to keep it spotless. We recommend avoiding abrasive sponges or acidic cleaners that could damage the protective layer. Depending on use, you can apply a maintenance wax or a new protective varnish every one or two years to revive the shine and protection of the covering, but overall waxed concrete requires little effort to remain beautiful over time.
