Waxed concrete

Why choose waxed concrete for your bathroom?

The bathroom is a room where aesthetics and technology must come together perfectly. Waxed concrete meets this dual requirement thanks to a number of practical qualities.

Its continuous surface completely eliminates joints - those areas in traditional tiling that end up accumulating mould and scale. The visual result is immediate: the space looks bigger, brighter and cleaner. The absence of joints also makes daily cleaning much easier.

Technically speaking, the waxed concrete used by Azzo is a «waterproof» system. Wall2Floor Top Coat Waterproof is a two-component epoxy coating specially formulated for damp environments. Even if the surface varnish is scratched, the material does not absorb water or change colour. This characteristic makes it suitable for the most demanding environments, including steam rooms.

Finally, every project is unique. Thanks to a wide choice of pigments and textures - matt, satin or gloss - waxed concrete is just as suited to a minimalist spa atmosphere as it is to a warmer style. It's a covering that can be entirely customised to suit your taste.

Renovating existing tiles: transforming your bathroom without demolishing it

One of the major advantages of waxed concrete in bathroom renovation is its ability to cover existing tiles. This technique offers considerable advantages for homeowners in Satigny and neighbouring municipalities.

At around 4 mm thick, waxed concrete can be laid directly over existing tiles, provided the substrate is stable, clean and properly prepared. In most cases, degreasing followed by the application of a primer will suffice.

This approach avoids the need to demolish the old covering, which significantly reduces the duration and cost of the worksite. There's also an often overlooked advantage: old tiling adhesives often contain asbestos. By working over the existing tiling, you can avoid having to remove asbestos, which can be very costly.

The end result is a new, modern and perfectly smooth covering that completely hides the original tiles. Both walls and floors can be treated, offering total visual continuity in your renovated bathroom.

Floors, walls and walk-in shower

Waxed concrete can be applied to all the surfaces in your bathroom, each with its own specific properties.

The floor is the most frequently treated surface. Here, waxed concrete offers high resistance to wear and tear and everyday stains, while creating a pleasant surface underfoot. Its compatibility with underfloor heating makes it a particularly good choice for thermal comfort.

The walls covered in waxed concrete bring immediate visual coherence to the room. The smooth, uniform surface is a great alternative to ageing tiles, and offers a range of customisable shades - from classic mineral greys to warmer, more contemporary shades.

Italian-style shower represents the most technical and most rewarding application. Thanks to Azzo's multi-layer waterproofing system - primer, two coats of special resin-enriched cement, two coats of decorative waxed concrete, then three coats of protective varnish - the shower is completely watertight, built into the mass and not just on the surface.

Waxed concrete in a bathroom - Geneva - Azzo

The Azzo method: craftsmanship based in Satigny

What distinguishes a successful waxed concrete installation from a disappointment is above all the craftsman's know-how. At Azzo, a company founded in Satigny in 2018, Aureliano and Harald have over 25 years' experience in the painting and decorative coatings trades. Both holders of a CFC, they completed their training with technical and decorative courses in Italy, notably in Venice.

Their bathroom application protocol follows a rigorous 7-layer process:

  1. Diagnosing the substrate and checking the moisture content (below 4 %)
  2. Application of primer
  3. First pass of special enriched cement - creation of the watertight shield
  4. Second pass of special cement
  5. Two coats of decorative waxed concrete - adding substance and texture
  6. Meticulous sanding
  7. Application of 3 coats of protective varnish

Each stage follows strict drying times and precise temperature and humidity conditions. It's this rigorous craftsmanship, applied on every job, that guarantees long-lasting results and an impeccable finish.

From Satigny, Azzo works in the surrounding communes - Versoix, Meyrin - and throughout the canton of Geneva.

How do you maintain the waxed concrete in your bathroom?

Maintaining waxed concrete in the bathroom is easy, as long as you follow a few basic rules.

On a day-to-day basis, cleaning with lukewarm water, a pH-neutral soap (black soap or Marseille soap) and a microfibre cloth is all that's needed. The absence of joints means that dirt has nowhere to hide: a quick wipe will keep the surface spotless.

It is important to avoid alkaline products, bleach, aggressive limescale removers and abrasive sponges, which could damage the protective coating. Azzo supplies specific maintenance products for water features, to combat limescale without damaging the coating.

Depending on use, applying a maintenance wax once or twice a year will revive the shine of the surface. The protective varnish can be renewed after a few years to keep the surface looking new over the long term.

Yes, provided you use the right system. The waxed concrete installed by Azzo incorporates a waterproof complex whose waterproofing is built into the mass thanks to technical layers of cement enriched with epoxy resins, laid under the decorative concrete. It's not the varnish alone that ensures waterproofing, but the whole multi-layer system. This process is suitable for walk-in showers and even steam rooms.

Yes, this is one of the most common uses in renovation. Waxed concrete adheres perfectly to existing tiles, provided they are stable and properly prepared. This technique avoids the need for demolition, reduces the length of the worksite and avoids the need to remove asbestos from old glues. The final thickness is around 4 mm - thin but very solid.

Properly applied to a sound, stable substrate, the risk of cracking is very low. The resin-enriched formulation gives waxed concrete a slight elasticity that allows it to follow the micro-movements of the substrate without cracking. Prior diagnosis of the substrate by a professional is essential to guarantee the durability of the coating.

When laid using professional quality products, waxed concrete can last for more than 20 years. The structure of the coating is durable. Only the surface varnish layer may need refreshing after a few years to retain its original appearance.

The duration depends on the surface to be treated and the condition of the existing substrate. The 7 successive coats and the drying time between each stage generally require several days' work. Azzo will draw up a precise schedule during the initial diagnosis.
